The Quakers Hill Pirates hosted the Holroyd Giants at Corbin Reserve last Sunday in Round 14 of the Sydney Winter Baseball League and, for the second week in a row, completed a ‘clean sweep’ of their visitors by winning all 3 Grades.  The 1st Grade win was dominated by a 4 inning shut out by Closing Pitcher Jason Pospishil and a 3 RBI Home Run to Andrew Azzopardi.

An 8-3 win over the Holroyd Giants consolidated second place on the 2011 competition ladder for Pirates 1st Grade.  2 Pirates’ errors early in the game allowed the Giants to score 3 unearned runs to maintain a 3-all tie when Starting Pirates’ Pitcher Andrew Erickson retired.  However, Pirates’ Closing Pitcher, Jason Pospishil (Sydney Blue Sox Assistant Coach and former Minnesota Twins Minor Leaguer) shut out the Giants for the next 4 innings which allowed the Pirates’ offense to forge a lead.  The win was sealed for the Pirates when Centre Fielder Andrew Azzopardi stepped to the plate in the 7th innings.  With a count of 1 ball and 1 strike against him, Azzopardi crushed the next pitch to left-centre for a Home Run that also scored Alex Johnson and Drew Keating.  The Pirates retained their number 1 position on the 2nd Grade competition ladder with a 7-2 win, whilst 3rd Grade was awarded a 9-0 forfeit by Holroyd.

“We were confident of our chances today, but that doesn’t always convert to the right result”, said Pirates’ Head Coach, Nathan Wright.  “Our 1st Grade win was a great team effort with standouts including Pops’ 4 inning shutout, Drew Keating batted 3 from 3, and Azza got ‘all of that’ to score us a 3 RBI Home Run. “

The Pirates are at home again at Corbin Reserve next Sunday, 17th July, in a ‘top of the table clash’ against the Marrickville Penguins, who are currently in 1st place in First Grade and leading the 2011 Club Championship.  All supporters are welcome (1st Grade starts at 2pm).   The Pirates Major League squad will be coaching a free Futures Development Clinic from 12pm – 1pm for children aged 5 – 10.  In addition, the Pirates are hosting free “Try Baseball” days at Corbin on Sundays 24th & 31st July from 10am – 2pm for all interested Junior Players aged 5 and above, featuring many of the Pirates’ Sydney Blue Sox players.  Go to www.qhpirates.com.au for full details.
