Pirates almost perfect day

1st Grade: Pirates 4, Marrickville 5

2nd Grade: Pirates 7, Marrickville 6

3rd Grade: Pirates 6, Marrickville 5

The Quakers Hill Pirates hosted the Marrickville Penguins (Club Championship Leaders) at Corbin Reserve last Sunday in Round 15 of the Sydney Winter Baseball League and almost achieved a perfect result with only 1 run separating the score in all 3 Grades.  Adding to the Pirates Baseball Club’s near perfect day was a 15-3 win in the Hills Junior Baseball Winter U12 Grand Final.

Pirates’ 3rd Grade led the attack against Marrickville with a come from behind 6-5 win secured with a walk off Home Run by Nigel Boon.  With this win, the “Puppy Pirates” now leap frog Marrickville into 5th place on the competition ladder putting them within  reach of the Playoff Finals with only 3 rounds to go.  Pirates 2nd Grade retained their position at number one on the ladder with a come from behind win (7-6) as well, and again featured a walk off Home Run in the last innings, this time to Josh Dean.

The 1st Grade game promised a great clash between the undefeated Marrickville and second place Pirates, and featured many Australian Baseball League players, including Blue Sox players Matt Bennett and Alex Johnson.  Despite missing starting & closing pitchers Lee Ingram and Jason Pospishil, the Pirates put up a great fight against Marrickville.  Both teams were scoreless after 3 innings before the Pirates offense combined in the 4th to score 3 runs.  Starting pitcher Andrew Ericksen was replaced by Josh Dean in the top of the 7th innings with a 3-1 lead.  However, Marrickville immediately pounced scoring 4 runs and took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the 9th innings.  The Pirates had their chances to again claim a come from behind win.  With 2 out, the Pirates managed to load the bases with John Dean hit by a pitch, Alex Johnson intentionally walked (AJ is leading the competition batting average), and Alex Howe also walked, which then brought Andrew Azzopardi to the plate.  However, Azzopardi was unable to repeat his heroics in Round 14 where he scored a Home Run for a Pirates win and this time skyed a pop up for the 3rd out.  The Pirates are away next Sunday, 24th July, against University of NSW, but return to Corbin Reserve on 31st July to host the Western Sydney Boomers.
